Germany/Italy over Spring Break
The courtyard of the mostly burned down Heidelberg Castle. Women are trouble. The king fell in love with his English queen and wanted to make her happy in cold, damp, culturally backward Bavaria. Heidelberg had been unpenetrable for centuries, but it was a brief time of peace and he decided it was not all that important to keep its walls unbreachable. He built a corridor and Shakespearian-style theatre in and over the moat. She was happy, he was happy, they had twelve children and the castle fell to invaders. Several years later, lightening struck the wood shingled and framed theatre and quickly spread to the support beams in the rest of the castle, burning most of it to the ground. Walls stand with windows, but no rooms (Right side of the picture). It's easy to see where things were, but only one section has ben rebuilt. The main building with chapel and banquet hall are avaiable for weddings etc. (left side of the pic).
3-D art ala the 15th century. A painted body of a stag with a real, stuffed, somewhat mangy, head.
i don't find this pic of me attractive, but I love that we're laughing and the Rhine is in the background.
Fancy thing in the castle.
We thought we'd found the big cask of wine.
Then we found it.
My husband (then fiance) as Igor at the ruins of Frankenstien Castle.
Us up on the non-ruined part of the ruins of Frankenstein Castle.
